Did you know before Schlow was a library it was the name of a women’s clothing store, located where Irving’s is today? One of State College’s only two-story shops, the late Helen Breon Volz ’54 bought her first formal there, and her first bikini (color: gold). In her firsthand account, Life in Downtown State College, Helen shares this story and many more, painting a picture of her girlhood and her hometown. We are delighted to bring this story to you with permission from her husband Bud, and trust it will inspire many memories for her classmates and fellow alumni, and give younger generations a vivid glimpse into the history of State College.
